Why the Next Frontier for AI in Financial Services Is Not the Bank — It Is the Dealer

The conversation about AI in financial services has been dominated, almost entirely, by the big institutions. Banks automating credit decisions. Insurers using machine learning to price risk. Wealth managers deploying algorithms to manage portfolios. It is a legitimate story, but it is not the most interesting one.

The most interesting story is happening at the edges of the financial system — in the dealer networks, broker channels, and point-of-sale environments where financial products actually reach consumers. And it is a story that most people in the industry are not paying attention to yet.

I spent the better part of a decade building financial distribution infrastructure. At RateSetter, I built the motor finance division from zero — a national dealer network, a credit and compliance framework, and a point-of-sale lending product that had to work for three very different parties simultaneously: the lender, the borrower, and the dealer. The complexity was not in the credit model. It was in the distribution.

Getting a financial product into a dealership is not a technology problem. It is a trust problem. Dealers are not financial services professionals. They are salespeople who happen to sell products that require finance. They will recommend a finance product if it is easy to use, if it helps them close sales, and if they trust the company behind it. They will not recommend it if the application process is slow, if the approval rates are unpredictable, or if the customer experience is poor.

This is where AI changes everything — and not in the way most people expect.

The obvious application is credit decisioning: faster approvals, better risk assessment, fewer manual reviews. That is real and it matters. But the more transformative application is in the dealer experience itself. AI can now do things that were simply not possible five years ago. It can predict which customers are likely to need finance before they ask. It can surface the right product at the right moment in the sales conversation. It can flag when a dealer's approval rate is declining and diagnose why. It can onboard a new dealer partner in hours rather than weeks.

In other words, AI does not just make the credit decision faster. It makes the entire distribution relationship smarter.

This matters enormously for any brand that sells high-value products through an intermediary network — whether that is motor vehicles, industrial equipment, premium consumer goods, or anything else where the dealer or broker is the critical link between the manufacturer and the customer. The brands that build AI-enabled distribution infrastructure now will have a structural advantage that is very difficult for competitors to replicate later.

The challenge is that most brands do not know where to start. The AI tools exist. The data exists. The distribution networks exist. What is missing is the operational experience to connect them — someone who understands both the financial services mechanics and the commercial realities of dealer relationships.

That is the gap Orbyt Studio was built to close.

If you are building or scaling a dealer network and thinking about how AI fits into your commercial infrastructure, I would welcome a conversation.
